What Is Psychedelic-Assisted Therapy?

A gentle path inward. An ancient practice rediscovered in modern times.

Ever felt like you’ve done all the inner work, and yet something still feels out of reach?

That’s where Sarah found herself—reading the books, asking the big questions—yet still carrying something unspoken.

Then one quiet evening, she came across something that opened a door she never knew existed. And what she found inside? A way forward that felt like coming home.

The Loss That Opened the Door

Sarah’s closest friend had been navigating a lifetime of emotional pain. After years of medication for bipolar disorder, his body began rejecting the treatment. As he started to face the deeper roots of what he carried—generational trauma, unspoken grief—Sarah sat with him in countless conversations.

Eventually, his path led him elsewhere. He chose to leave this life.

For Sarah, it was an ache that had no map. She could feel herself wanting to hold the weight of his choices… until something inside her asked, “Is there another way to honour this story?”

That question became the beginning.

When a Book Speaks Louder Than Words

She picked up a book one afternoon—How to Change Your Mind: The New Science of Psychedelics by Michael Pollan—and found a chapter on psilocybin. Magic mushrooms. A topic she had never even considered.

She paused.

As a mother, a partner, and someone who had never explored altered states—this wasn’t just outside her comfort zone. It was outside her whole frame of reference.

And yet… something in her said yes.

That quiet yes became her turning point.

So What Is Psychedelic-Assisted Therapy?

Psychedelic-Assisted Therapy blends specific plant-based or synthetic psychedelics with therapeutic guidance. It supports people navigating deep emotional pain, trauma, or experiences that traditional approaches often struggle to address.

Since July 2023, some psychedelic substances—like psilocybin and MDMA—are legally accessible in Australia through prescription by authorised psychiatrists for the treatment of conditions like PTSD and treatment-resistant depression.

Everyone providing psychedelic support is not an authorised prescriber. Instead, some therapists, like myself, focus on offering psychoeducation, harm reduction strategies, preparation, and integration support. This approach ensures you feel informed, supported, and empowered throughout your journey.

The Three Key Phases

Preparation

The preparation phase is a gentle introduction to the process.

It helps clarify what matters most to you, supports you in identifying any emotional or mental patterns that may arise, and creates a grounded, nurturing environment for your upcoming journey.

This stage includes reflective conversation, intention setting, and building a sense of readiness—so that when the time comes, you feel supported, steady, and clear about what you're stepping into.

Dosing Session

The dosing session is where the therapeutic journey unfolds under appropriate supervision, using prescribed psychedelic substances.

This part of the process takes place in a carefully prepared setting—quiet, comfortable, and intentionally supportive—so your body and mind can relax and open. In this environment, people often access deep insights, experience emotional release, and notice patterns that once felt buried or unclear.

Each step is facilitated with calm, consistent guidance. This helps you remain anchored in presence while exploring inner landscapes that may hold both clarity and transformation.

Integration

The integration phase supports you in making sense of what emerged during your session.

This is a space for reflection, conversation, and gentle exploration. It helps you begin to bring insights into your daily life—at your own pace and in ways that feel grounded and real.

You may start to find words for your experience, connect the dots between past and present, and explore meaningful shifts in how you relate to yourself and others.

This is where the experience becomes part of your life story—grounded, embodied, and ongoing.

Could This Path Resonate?

This is a path of remembering. A way of reconnecting to the part of you that’s always been whole, even when life convinced you otherwise.

More therapists are stepping into this work because it bridges two powerful worlds—clinical knowledge and soulful connection. Care that feels truly human.

Questions to Ask Yourself

  • What would it feel like to explore yourself without judgment?

  • How might life shift if you no longer carried old pain alone?

  • Are you curious about how much more is possible for you?

  • Are you ready to reconnect with the part of you that’s always known the way?

Is This for You?

You don’t have to know all the answers. You only need to notice what’s stirring in you now.

Does something here feel aligned?

Does it spark a quiet yes?
